NEW ENVIRONMENTAL TAX IN PLAYA DEL CARMEN AND THE RIVIERA MAYA

As of October 1, 2017, the Solidaridad Municipal Government has implemented an environmental tax which will be charged to hotel guests in Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya. This tax becomes effective as part of the government’s effort to preserve the world known natural beauties of the destination.

This new initiative includes the hotels part of Condo Hotels Playa del Carmen group.

What is the purpose of this new environmental tax?
The creation and implementation of this environmental tax in the Riviera Maya and Playa del Carmen will contribute to the protection of the region through the following initiatives:

  • Reducing carbon emissions by installing LED lights in public areas
  • Conservation and maintenance of beaches
  • Disposal of outdoor garbage dumps
  • Waste management in urban areas and more…

The main mission of these and other programs that will be made effective in the area thanks to the new environmental tax, is to make the Riviera Maya a sustainable destination.

Why are these initiatives and this tax necessary?

Condo Hotels Playa del Carmen and all the tourists who visit this tourist destination all year round know that the Riviera Maya is an area known worldwide for its great coral reef, long underground rivers, beautiful beaches and unique flora and fauna. However, due to the large number of visitors and local population that continues to increase year by year, it is necessary to act now in order to improve public services, waste management and other services to help improve the health of the ecosystems and environment of the destination.
This new environmental tax will be charged by the Government of the Solidaridad Municipality in order to fund the initiatives and programs mentioned.
This environmental tax will apply only to hotel guests in Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya. Therefore, this does not apply in Cancun or Puerto Morelos.
