On a recent trip to up-and-coming Playa del Carmen, Mexico, I had the pleasure of staying at the brand-new El Taj Oceanfront Condo Hotel. Its multilevel design, lush foliage and Balinese decor made me feel like I’d entered a veritable luxury treehouse, complete with a cascade waterfall and prime beach view.
The Event Spaces
El Taj is located directly on the beach, making vows on the sand the most popular choice. The hotel is also currently building a pier with a gazebo for overwater ceremonies. Up at the property — yet still on the sand — Indigo Beach Club is a great reception venue, with huge beehive lanterns illuminating a forest of palms.
Another option: Rent a penthouse and use its rooftop terrace for an intimate ceremony overlooking the Caribbean. With loved ones huddled close, say I do under a private thatched roof, then party it up afterward: Dance to a mariachi band, munch on hors d’oeuvres from Indigo, and even enjoy a late-night dip — each terrace has its own hot tub!
Infinity-edge pools are all the rage, but I’ve never seen anything like the one at El Taj. A pool on the main level has a glass wall as its fourth side, with water flowing over the edge into another pool below. Have your hubby go underwater while you snap a pic of him from a distance — the glass wall makes it look like a swank fish tank and in it, your hunky merman!
Jet Blue was a great choice for an East Coast girl like me. Nonstop flights are available from most Eastern hubs like Orlando, D.C., NYC and Boston (most West Coast flights only have one transfer). We were on time, given free cookies and each had our own mini TV screen. Plus, from O-town, it was only an hour-and-a-half flight! Now that’s what I call service.
